For farms, long residential driveways, or wherever there is a gravel road, dust control is a must. It can not only decrease dust but also helps bind small rocks and reduces the incidence of chipping. Uncontrolled dust isn't only inconvenient, it can be dangerous when it limits sight lines. If you have a gravel road, you may want to consider chip sealing the roadway for a more permanent solution.

Gravel roads can be repaired to like new condition with a two coat chip seal. Asphalt and gravel are layered and compacted to create a level and firm roadway. Adding single layer chip seals every five years will create a strong smooth pavement type surface. This is exactly how older rural roads were made and how many rural county roads are still maintained.

Chip sealing is the process of shooting a layer of asphalt onto an existing gravel road, placing a layer of rock over the asphalt completely covering the asphalt, then rolling the completed bed with a large roller. Compacting and binding the asphalt and rock. Chip sealing can be done on one or two layers. For most roadways two layers of rock is recommended. For roads in better shape, or roads that recevied a two coat chip seal within the prior 5 years, a one layer of gravel will maintain the road in good shape for five to seven more years.
It depends on the qualify of your roadway. But a two coat chip seal should have a useful life of seven to ten years. During the last few years you will see more rutting and potholes developing. Which is why we always recommend that you refresh your roadway with a single layer chip seal every five to seven years.
These are the factors that can go into the cost of a chip seal.
As a general rule of thumb however, a two coat chip seal will be about 25% of the cost of an asphalt pavement.
Our pricing as of 2025 is about $3/square yard
Absolutely. If your road has previously been chip sealed or paved with hot asphalt, we can chip seal over the top to give it a new surface. You may have driven on public roads in the country where you come across a section of what appears to be gravel on the road. That is a one coat chip seal meant to repair and resurface that section of road.

Dust generated by vehicular traffic on unpaved roads can cause road deterioration, sediment run-off, and even negatively impact the health of those exposed. Dust control is done by using a tanker truck with a specialized pump and spray system to evenly lay down a product, such as Lignosulfonate, Magnesium Chloride or Earthbind® products. These products may not always be available, but all are all effective in controlling dust on unpaved roads
Bretthauer Road Oil has contracts with many cities and counties in Northwest Oregon to apply dust control products to their gravel roads. We also have a large number of private customers, including HOA's, vineyard, farm, and home owners with gravel driveways.
We do not use asphalt for dust control. The products we use are used by local governments on their roads and considered safe and effective. There may be a premium product available that the manufacturer states is more environmentally friendly than other products. We are happy to use that product upon request.
Northwest Oregon has been seeing summers that are dryer and last longer. Dust control is done annually (For a longer term solution check out our chip sealing page)
Most of our customers want an application on their roadways between May through October (or whenever the seasonal rain start to fall regularly). Sometimes a single coat, if done in June or July may be adequate for many clients. But often a second coat is required.
We charge based on the length and width of the roadway, plus a travel fee if the road is located more than 10 miles from our facility in Hillsboro, Oregon. Standard roadway widths are nine, twelve, sixteen and eighteen feet.
Contact us and we will give you instructions on how to estimate the cost and how to mark the roadway in preparation for application. When you confirm the service you will pay a deposit based on the estimated square yardage.
When we come to apply the dust control product we can let you know if the estimated footage you provided is accurate, or if any adjustments need to be made.
For 2025 the average cost for a twelve foot wide application was $3.00 per roadway lineal foot.
The cost of road construction services varies depending on the size and complexity of the project. We provide free estimates and will work with you to find a solution that fits your budget.
We take all necessary safety precautions during road construction, including proper signage, traffic control, and personal protective equipment for our workers.
For dust control payment is due at the time you book services. For chip sealing, one half payment is due at the time you sign the agreement and one half is due on completion.
Payments can be made by credit card, Venmo, certified check or personal check on approval.
